The Things They Carried Reading Schedule and Annotation Examples

I have moved back The Things They Carried annotations to the first week of October. I did not want the GHSWT and the Pep Rally to interfere with the classes.

Here is a calendar that gives the due date for each set of annotations. I have tried to give you one class period off between the readings, so stay on top of it. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to have the annotations ready on the assigned date.

Feel free to read ahead. That will save you valuable time.

Items to remember when annotating:

1. Focus on LANGUAGE and not plot summary. (Diction, Syntax, Rhetorical Devices, Tone, etc.)

2. Locate rhetorical devices and explain the EFFECT of the device. How does the device function in the sentence? What purpose does it serve? How does the device enhance the meaning?

3. Don't forget the BEFORE and AFTER at the beginning of each chapter.

4. Find CONNECTIONS within the sentence, paragraph, chapter, and text. I should see arrows, arrows, arrows.

5. A MINIMUM of 3 annotations per page.

We will begin our analysis of the movie Capote. If you have not returned your signed syllabus, then you cannot view this film. Please make sure I have a signed syllabus on file. Advanced Composition: September 26- September 30

This Week's Agenda:

AP Language Extra Credit

Ok, so you want some extra credit. Maybe your summer reading grade is not so hot. If you want an opportunity to raise your grade, then fully complete this extra credit assignment. Follow ALL of these directions to receive any extra credit. You will need to have access to the internet to complete this assignment.

AP Language - Close Analysis Paragraph Examples

Hey AP Langers,

Your homework is to choose any passage from In Cold Blood and write a close analysis paragraph. Remember to create an overarching theme as the first sentence. Work on integrating key words and phrases into your sentences. This must be a minimum of ten sentences (complex sentences). Typed, MLA.

This Week's Agenda:

Monday (White Day)

Monday (White Day): I will  not be at school Monday do to an all-day meeting. Please follow the directions in the letter that I have left for you. You will discuss Part IV for the first half of class. Please thoroughly discuss Part IV and turn in your roles to the folder on my desk. For the second half of class you will complete the Issue, Task, Audience handout. Please return to your table and QUIETLY work on this assignment. This is due to the folder by the END of the period.

Tuesday (Blue Day) and Wednesday (White Day): Finish up In Cold Blood discussions and work on a Close Reading Paragraph. Prepare for final assessment Thursday and Friday.

Thursday (Blue Day) and Friday (White Day): Final Assessment over In Cold Blood.

Advanced Composition: September 12-16

This Week's Agenda:

Monday (White Day): I will  not be at school Monday do to an all-day meeting. Please follow the directions in the letter that I have left for you. You will work on the Punctuation Matters handout. Warning: This is a challenging assignment, so please do not give up. I will be impressed with your skills! :-) You will NOT have a second chance on this assignment, so please turn it in FULLY completed by the end of the period. You can also continue to work on your Artifact Writing piece. Bring TWO typed copies to class Wednesday. My printer is out of ink, so please have the two printed copies BEFORE you come to class. Tuesday (Blue Day) and Wednesday (White Day): We will continue to work on our Artifact piece.  Peer critiques will be conducted on these days. Don't forget to have a visual component. Be prepared to present next class period.

Thursday (Blue Day) and Friday (White Day): You will read your pieces to the class. You will write thank you notes to six different students. Bring to class that day the following items:
