Advanced Composition: November 28-December 2

I hope everyone had a nice and relaxing break! Hopefully you and your group have been working over the break to finalize your piece for this week's performance.

Here's the agenda for this week:

Monday-Wednesday are work days with your group.

Tuesday (White Day) and Wednesday (Blue Day): You need to hand me a clean, typed copy of your poem, including the Works Cited page by the END of the period. Your group will have an opportunity to perform your piece for classroom and teacher feedback.

Thursday (White Day) and Friday (Blue Day): Final Performances in the Black Box Theater. You will have an audience of your peers, so make it count!

For your summative assessment, you will perform your final piece in a group setting. I have arranged the groups based on your response to your warm-up question: What is the biggest issue facing teenagers today?

The group's piece must contain factual evidence, so you will research your topic. Your research must include a magazine article, online database article, and a print resource. You will work on collecting the evidence this week in the Media Center and Computer Lab.

The poem must be 100% memorized by ALL members in the group. 

Performance Component:

Here are three videos to help you work on the group performance element. What can you take away from these performances and incorporate into your group's performance? How are the non-verbal cues successful? How does each group evoke emotion?

Homework for Wednesday: Complete HOT Questions for Chapters 19-22. Same directions as last time. 3 HOT Questions for EACH chapter. One type of question for each (analysis, synthesis, evaluation). This Week's Agenda:

Monday (Blue Day) and Tuesday (White Day) We are preparing for our summative assessment for The Things They Carried test. Our warm-ups consist of practicing for the assessment. Here is our Monday/Tuesday warm-up:

Analyze each excerpt for the following:  5 Points for Each Excerpt

1. Author’s Purpose (Symbolic Meaning/Message of the Excerpt/Overarching Theme/Main Idea)

2. One Rhetorical Element (a different element per excerpt – once you use that element, you cannot use it again – choose wisely)

3. Effect of the Rhetorical Element within the Excerpt (How does it Function in the sentence)

4. Connect the Excerpt to a SPECIFIC example from the Text (Chapter Titles, Characters, Events)

5. Write with Elevated Diction and Varied Syntax

In any war story, but especially a true one, it’s difficult to separate what happened from what seemed to happen.  What seems to happen becomes its own happening and has to be told that way. The angles of vision are skewed. When a booby trap explodes, you close your eyes and duck and float outside yourself. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal seemingness, which makes the story seem untrue, but which in fact represents the hard and exact truth as it seemed.

In-class activity: Each student is given a chapter from 1-6 to choose an essential passage and write a close analysis paragraph. Students will read their close analysis to the class and each student will score the paragraph based on the 1-5 rubric.

Wednesday(Blue Day) and Thursday (White Day): Warm-up: SAT question of the day. Students will finish reading/scoring the close analysis.
