EQ: What makes a good writer?

Daily Writing-Students are given a daily writing assignment over a topic that relates to the unit, standard, lesson in which we are studying.

Students will utilize USA test-prep for reviewing for the EOCT....

Students will continue poetry unit and adding poetry to portfolios...

Students will complete bench mark/check-point test using new technology I-Respond...

Students will discuss and review rap lyrics and love ballads by famous authors. Students will be placed in groups to analyze and annotate lyrics and present their interpretations to the class in the form of a skit, new poem, or narrative, etc...

Poetry Slam- Students will watch a video clip from a live peotry slam. Students will read between 1 &3 peoms from the poetry portfolio to the class.

Grammar Workbook- Reveiew nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs....

Review "I Can Statements" w/ Standards

ELA9RL1.a Poetry: Identifies and responds to the effects of subject matter (topic, theme), sound devices (alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme scheme), figurative language (personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole), and structure (fixed and free forms, rhymed and un-rhymed, narrative and lyric) in a variety of poems.

2) Students will complete the "I Am" poem model...Students will complete the I am model

Ex: I am...

      I want...

      I hear....

3) Students will read and annotate "The Road Not Traveled" by Robert Frost...

4) Students will complete Tone and Mood graphic organizer review and reading new poems by: Maya Angelou, Gabriela Mistral, Sonia Sanchez, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Langston Hughes...

5) Students will discuss and review rap lyrics and love ballads by famous authors. Students will be placed in groups to analyze and annotate lyrics and present their interpretations to the class in the form of a skit, new poem, or narrative, etc...

Students will complete Daily writing to reflect Poetry Unit....

Review "I Can Statements" w/ Standards

Students will return a parent notification of failing grades and opportunity for make-up work by Monday 11/8.

Narrative Project

1) Students will be assigned a collaborative group for this project. Each person in group will be responsible fro writing a reflection (self-assessment) of their and their teammate's (peer-assessment) efforts in the project.

2) Students will annotate the poem they select from a list to determine tone, mood, and figurative language. 

3) Usingphoto story, movie maker, or powerpoint students will re-tell the events of the poem through music, images, narration or a skit.

Examples of poem selections: "At the Dance" by Judith Pordon, "On Turning Ten" by Billy Collins, "The Lady of Shalott" by Alfred Lord Tennyson, etc....
