9th Literature- Servalis & Morris

Week of January 24th-28th

Silent Reading-Students will read silently for approximately 15 minutes. Students will be given an assignment at the end of two weeks to reflect their reading skills.

Journal/Daily Writing- Students will complete a daily journal assignment given by the teachers. Example Journal Topics: Who are you favorite Hip Hop artist and Why? How has Hip Hop influence American Culture? Which decade was most influential during the Hip Hop Era? Do you think that Hip Hop will continue to flourish in the next 10 years, and Why?

Grammar, Poetry, and Short Story review on USA Prep-Test.

Students will start introduction material to Romeo & Juliet. (Servalis)

Students will read excerpts for the book "The Pact". (Morris)

Students will complete "Before Hip Hop was Hip Hop" By: Rebecca Walker.

Students will present the Before Hip Hop was Hip Hop Non-fiction project. Students will be given a rubric on Monday & Tuesday. Teachers will review the rubric for the project so that students will know all the expectations for the assignment. Project will count approximately 400 points for Part I & II and 100 points for presenting for a total of 500 points.

Overview of Assignment

Students will complete "Before Hip Hop was Hip Hop" By: Rebecca Walker.

Part I

• Students will create a Popular Culture Timeline/Collage of Hip Hop using the magazines from the magazine box or they can draw picturesto complete their Timeline. Students can also print a few pictures on-line in the computer lab.
• Students will identify key events in Pop Culture history, adding details using music, fashion from each decade, and even faddish lingo from each decade.
• Students will have an opportunity to go to the computer lab to look up information about Hip Hop Artist, Fashion, and Music from the late 1970’s to 2010. Students should divide their time line by each decade. For example, 80s, 90s, and etc…

Part II

Students will search for their favorite Hip Hop Artist and select their favorite song by that artist. You will need a censored or clean versionof the song/rap. You will write a 1 page or more description about the song and the artist. Students need to include what the song is about, their interpretation or analysis of the song, and details about the author and why he/or she is their favorite artist. Information needs to be written in your own words or paraphrased. This will be handwritten neatly or typed and placed on a piece of construction paper.
