What's the difference between an explicit and a recursive formula for a sequence?  In today's discussion I gave you the sequence of square numbers:  1, 4, 9, 16, ...  Finding the explicit formula was easy.  Finding a recursive formula--not so much.  I challenge you to try to figure it out --on your own.  No cheating.  If you do figure it out, bring it me and I will give you a small prize.

For homework complete problem 1 (alll parts) on the archery task.  On Monday, you will finish that with your group.

From the notes and from the practice "where does the point fit", you should have an idea of the skills you will need for Linear programming including graphing inequalities, solving for y, and determining if a point is a solution to an inequality. 

We began the Learning Task on Linear Programming, but it was a slow start.  You should read the rest of the task up to problem 1.  Make sure you follow the examples and note any questions you may have.  Your groups will start with problem 1 on Monday!

Calculus

After the warm up, we contintued to practice graphing f' from f.  We used an index card, to help us approximate the slope from the graph, but you could also use a coffee stirrer, a small straw, a ruler or even a toothpick.  Resist the urge to get the "right" answer, you are approximating these slopes. 

For homework, finish the worksheet and revisit the problems assigned on 9/28.  The notation may look strange on a few but dy/dx, Dx and d/dx all mean the same as f'(x)

Great job today!  Most of you did very well on the warm up and were doing a great job on the graphing problems comparing f to f'. 

Check the last blog and make sure you have completed the last book assignment and complete the f to f' worksheet.

AM3 Special Announcement!

Woo hoo!  I finished grading your unit test.  Since it was a stat test--I thought I would share a few stats with you.

The mean score was 81.25 with standard deviation 18.7.  The median score was 85.  The max score was 100.  I will not share the minimum score--I don't want to embarrass anyone.  The scores will be posted soon.

If you scored below 70--please see me before school on Thursday or after class for a remediation plan.

Here's the challenge--do at least as well on the sequences and series unit!

 

Math 3

After the pretest, we previewed the last part of unit 1, linear programming.  There are a lot of skills that you must recall from Math 1 (or earlier) for you to be successful in this unit.  You will have to be able to solve for y (get y on a side by itself), you will have to shade an appropriate region and you will have to be able to identify a solution to one or more inequalities...essentially the same thing from today's notes.

Next class we put these skills to use.

Your homework is to complete probolem # 6 from the Notes and the worksheet, "how does it fit?".

Calculus Blue

Today we identified the limit we used to find the slope of the line tangent to a curve at a point as the derivative.  What is the difference in using x instead of a number in the limit?  How did that change the value of the limit?

The pretest took more time than expected so most of you didn't have a chance to start the group activity.  This means you will need to do this at home and we will compare notes next class.

Also (as promised) the homework from the text is posted here:  p. 105 # 1 - 22, 25, 26, 27. 

I suggested to 4th period that they might want to start a study group with a few of their classmates.  You might want to try this option as well. Sometimes helping another person as your doing your own homework helps the work to make more sense.  Tutoring is still and will always be an option, but this may be a helpful strategy, too.

Today we began the unit on Sequences and Series.  This unit is primarily about identifying patterns.  Within your groups you identified a pattern and came up with an explicit formula for that pattern.  Many of you used different techniques including the graph, the calculator and some by just doing a little numerical trial and error.  I noticed in your graphs that many of you connected the dots--should you have done this?  Why or why not?

If you didn't finish exploration 14-1a and 14-2a then you should complete those for homework.  Also, you have an assignment from your text, p. 645# 1-14.
